MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS in contemporary art
This travelling exhibition explores depictions of landscape in contemporary art.
Depictions of landscape have existed since antiquity, whether in the form of mythological, biblical or historical narratives, or as a representation of property. The development into an independent genre within art took place gradually. Figures became increasingly smaller, whilst the landscape itself took centre stage.
This development can be traced from the Baroque period, through Romanticism and Impressionism, right into the 20th century. Contemporary art draws on this inexhaustible reservoir of ideas and creative possibilities as a reference, whilst at the same time responding to those civilisational developments that have led to a thematic paradigm shift in the field of landscape depiction: whereas previously it was the intimidating power of nature that humans felt threatened by, it now seems to be, conversely, a concern for its preservation.
